7 Rising LGBTQIA+ Music Artists in 2021

Continuing our annual tradition of featuring LGBTQIA+ music artists for Pride Month, we present to you the 2021 edition of our list. Queer power is increasingly becoming more visible in mainstream music, and these out and proud artists are solid proof of it. Happy Pride Month, everyone! ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

1. MAY-A ๐Ÿ›น

Picture songs about suburban life through the lens of teenage sensibility, and you get MAY-A. The 19-year-old Australian began releasing music in 2019 and has her first EP scheduled for release this July. ‘Time I Love To Waste’ is a great example of her diary-like songwriting that heavily features sweaters, trees and coffee. Very Taylor Swift in the best way, we think.

For fans of: King Princess, girl in red, Clairo

2. Joesef ๐ŸŽท

Drawing inspiration from jazz and blues, Joesef is a 25-year-old singer from Glasgow who’s gotten comparisons to big stars like Sam Smith and Amy Winehouse. The Sound of 2020 nominee released his EP, ‘Does It Make You Feel Good’, last yearโ€”an eclectic collection of songs that showcase his husky voice. ‘Comedown’ is one of the best of the lot.

For fans of: Giveon, Bruno Major, Mac Ayres

3. Serena Isioma ๐Ÿƒ

Serena Isioma is a non-binary singer and rapper crafting bedroom pop with their own unique vibe. It’s equal parts indie pop and R&B, just take ‘Sensitive’ for instance. Genre-blurring music is increasingly becoming the norm these days, but Isioma has successfully carved out a lane of their own.

For fans of: Arlo Parks, Q, WILLOW

4. Honey Dijon ๐Ÿฏ

Hailing from Chicago, Honey Dijon is an American DJ who has remixed songs from pop greats like Lady Gaga, Jessie Ware and Madonna. Best known for her eclectic and energetic performances, the DJ recently played a set at Glastonbury’s virtual livestream, and is also being featured in Calvin Klein’s new ‘#ProudInMyCalvins’ LGBTQIA+ campaign.

For fans of: Peggy Gou, Purple Disco Machine, Jayda G

5. JORDY โ˜๏ธ

With his colourful visuals and upbeat sound, JORDY is a rising artist repping the LGBTQIA+ community. His song ‘Long Distance’ comes at a poignant time of the pandemic as couples are forced to spend time apart. And the song’s release comes with a story, too: early this year, an unfinished snippet of the song posted by JORDY blew up on TikTok, leading him to get the song done and bring forward its release. Talk about an origin story.

For fans of: Lauv, Wrabel, Greyson Chance

6. Hope Tala โ˜€๏ธ

Just like our 2020 pick Arlo Parks, 21-year-old Londoner Hope Tala is turning pieces of poetry into genre-bending songs. ‘Drugstore’ is an underrated gem on her ‘Girl Eats Sun’ EP, a downtempo track of a love story that shows the singer’s versatility.

For fans of: Arlo Parks, Joy Crookes, Raveena

7. Red Moon ๐ŸŒ•

Norwegian-Swiss artist Red Moon combines ethereal vocals and emotional lyrics in her music to make for a cross between artists like Florence + The Machine and AURORA. With her latest release ‘Thirsty’, which the singer describes as “a playful and curious song about queer expression”, Red Moon is more than ready for the world to fall in love with her.

For fans of: AURORA, Florence + The Machine, London Grammar
